Age:14
Series: City of Heroes
canon point:World Description/history: The world of Primal Earth was once just like any other world, relatively normal, with the notable exception of the long forgotten myths of the ages that have been shown to be true, most notably by a pair of stalwart friends seeking a cure for a life-threatening illness shortly after WWI. The two stumbled upon the Well of the Furies, and in drinking from it, they gained the god-like powers of the incarnate. The two friends also discovered the fabled Pandora’s Box, which instead of containing all the world's plague and disease, contained all of the golden light of creation, and all of human creativity from the past millennia. Once released, it began the new golden age of superheroes. The two friends went their separate ways, later becoming Statesman and Lord Recluse.
Today, superheroes are so prevalent that there is an entire economy based around them in Paragon City, the home to many of the greatest heroes Primal Earth has ever seen, from Numina and Manticore in the Freedom Phalanx, to hundreds of everyday men and women gifted with god-like abilities fighting for truth, justice and freedom against hoards of vicious criminals. Paragon itself had suffered a serious blow at the hands of the aliens known as the Rikti. The city set themselves up with a series of war walls around each borough constructed with the very technology the Rikti had used against them. Circa 2007, Paragon City took down the mothership and isolated it in it’s own sector of the city, inviting many heroes to take their heavily guarded fortress down once and for all.
Meanwhile, across the sea, the Rogue Isles fester with all manner of villainy, ruled by the iron fist of Lord Recluse and his Arachnos organization. Ruled by anarchy and chaos, the rogues and villains gather there, making it an extremely dangerous place. Civilians would rather bow their heads than risk provoking a super villain, or their ruling power, lest they be stolen away in the dead of night. Everyone here is aware of the war zones scattered along the coast, the ultimate showdown of Recluse’s evil might, and Statesman’s righteous heroism. The world awaits the conclusion of the conflict of these age old enemies.

brief history: Mathieu was born to a magically inclined family on an island in the Rogue Isles, Port Oakes, at the turn of the century. While their family did fairly well, the neighborhood was poor and there was very little for them, given the environment they were living in. Eve, Matt’s mother, was a practicing witch with psionic abilities, and while she never told Matt, he was the product of a fling with a man who she now despised. Since he was born, she’d had a few new relationships, and the only stable one was with a thief named Luke. Luke was the closest thing to a father Matt ever had, so when he disappeared after going out on another job, the small family was broken.
Soon after, Eve moved her son back in with her father who was a powerful warlock in his own right. He gave the young boy a gift, marking the boy with a series of sigils on his body which would bond him with a magical being known as Orion, who took the form a great white lion made of light. Orion would be able to someday grant the boy incredibly power when he was older, as well as train and protect him throughout his life. Matt went many adventures with Orion, as the great beast was able to travel to any reality he wished, magic or otherwise. Through this, he was able to spend most of his time out of the system of the Rogue Isles which his family wanted to protect him from, receive training, and have many different experiences. He learned a fair bit about magic, and knew he had great magical potential, but he wasn’t able to cast spells as it was manifesting physically rather than something he could draw from to cast spells with. However, with Orion as his companion, he soon became a force to be reckoned with.
While he and Orion were out on an excursion, he assisted a hero in taking down a group of super villains causing mayhem in Atlas Park while he was visiting Paragon City for the first time. They won the battle, however, the villains managed to escape back to the Rogue isles, a safe haven for villains. Upon returning home, he was spotted by one of the crooks and they informed their boss. There was very little tolerance for citizens performing hero work in the rogue isles and no protections for people with powers. The boss, known as Noir, took it upon himself to deal with the child by ambushing the two of them. During the encounter, he infused Orion with his dark energy and forcibly fused him with Mathieu, resulting in a dramatic mutation of the boy’s body. He took on the form of half man, half beast, unable to return to his original form. He was neither Orion or Matthieu anymore, but a new individual born of the two.
Shadow, as he came to be known, was like a puppet to Noir. The man could make him do almost anything just by nudging him in the right ways via his powers, powers which he shared with Shadow and thus had some measure of mental control over him, though it was more of an influence over him rather than direct control. As Shadow began to grow he began to to resist more and more, which often forced Noir to control the boy with more and more severe methods. Once, Noir trapped him in his own shadow, and drew it into a dark crystal, a place which he spent an entire month in darkness.
When he was twelve years old, his grandpa and mother finally caught up with him during a heist and they saw what he had become. Noir and his crew made quick work of the two and they were captured, sent off to be dealt with by the Rogue Isle “justice system”. During the fight against his own family, Shadow was not able to lift a hand to them, and was able to fight free of Noir’s control. He fled and ended up running into a members of Wyvern, who managed with great difficulty to defeat him and bring him in.
After transporting him to Paragon City, he was kept in a Longbow base and seen by members of the magical community to be rehabilitated. It wasn’t until one of these magic users who knew who his family, Leona Marquis, met him that he was able to lower his guard and let them help him. She was able to get through to him and helped him to get to a place emotionally to where he could be released. Soon after, he was found by Luke who had long since been consigned to doing work for a few villain groups who spared his life in exchange for his skills. The only way for Luke to protect his family was to lie about having one. He took Shadow in, or rather, he put a roof over the boy’s head and cared for him but years of working hard jobs had damaged his body and soul.
As Shadow grew more accustomed to this new life, he began to experiment with his powers, while under a watchful eye of a program designed to keep young meta’s off the street and supervised by a senior hero. He eventually came under the wing of a robotic hero named Hellion, who saw potential in Shadow and, though reluctant, made a point to keep Shadow from regressing to his villainous habits. Shadow also made a few good friends during this time, like Crow and Toby.
Time passed, and wounds began to heal, with the occasional hiccup of Shadow getting into trouble for one reason or another, though nothing so egregious that he’d be penalized too badly. While spending time at Pocket D, a nightclub for superhero in a pocket dimension, he attracted the attention of an agent of arachnos who recognized him and also knew about what happened to his mother. The man manipulated him into robbing a bank for the information on his mother, which Shadow all too quickly accepted. Through this intel, he discovered that his mother was inducted into Arachnos by force and turned into a vicious abomination, otherwise known as a Tarantula Mistress, a spider like cyborg, and controlled by a psionic network.
Recruiting the aid of a handful of his friends, they searched for ways to save her. There were few options available to them and none of the possible results of such a rescue were optimistic. Still, they had hope that they could at least find a way to pull it off. After allocating contacts and resources, they made their way to Rogue isles to save her in a sizable party. It was dangerous and it took a few days, but they managed to save her despite the high stakes and danger they faced.
Once back, they consulted a powerful psychic and a man named Dr. Endtimes. Between the two of them, they were able to disconnect Eve from the psychic network and transfer her mind into a new body. However, much like Luke, Eve had suffered greatly and was not ready to rejoin society. She instead was admitted to a psychiatric hospital so she could heal with the aid of doctors and psychics who could help her.
Despite having gotten his small family back, Shadow felt torn between two world's. He didn’t always know what to do, or how to act, be it the conflict between man and beast or that of light and darkness. He felt lost, though his small circle of support gave him encouragement to carve out a place for himself. Going forward, he’ll just have to figure out what to do with himself and what he wants to be.
Personality: Growing up in an environment like the Rogue Isles, you have to be tough. Kids aren’t coddled much, even with a loving family. Matty learned quickly how to get in trouble, and to get himself out of it. Matt found it easier to act cocky and reckless, was always aware of the dangers he could face given the stories he grew up with about his home and things he’d witnessed himself. It was a hard life, and in a place as cutthroat as the Rogue Isles, only the strong survived. Despite the challenges he faced, he was capable of adapting to his social situations. Rough and tumble when he needed to be, good natured and outgoing when he wanted to be.
Orion, as a an individual, was gallant, courageous and wise. A guide and mentor to Mathieu. He also shared in some of Matt’s personality traits, gregarious, cocky, and sure of his abilities. Still, he was highly protective of Matt and his family. Once the two of them merged, their personalities did as well, creating a single being with the traits of both, with Mathieu’s personality dominant. With the radical changes to his body, it was hard to adjust and reconcile his personalities at first. Once he adapted though, there was less and less confusion with who he was as the two personalities became more fluid. It was during this time that he found himself controlled far more easily than when he was more self aware. When he was under Noirs influence, he was hostile and violent, always ready to fight as if it were a game. Some of these traits stayed with him, but they’re much more subdued, especially after he got the help he needed.
When he started out as Shadow, it was pretty easy to push him to do something unlawful or violent. He was vicious and mean spirited, and these days he knows that part of him is still inside of him. It’s one of the few things he’s actually ashamed of, but he isn’t always self aware enough to catch himself when he actually does it on impulse. He knows it’s wrong, and there’s something deep inside him that pushes him to do things that he would have never done as a human and Orion separately. He generally acts out quite a bit when the darkness inside him bubbles to the surface, and he had the tendency to get into fights or find himself in more trouble than he’s able to get himself out of.
With what had happened to his family, he bares a fair amount of guilt, blaming himself for what happened to them. He doesn’t really have the emotional maturity to deal with what happened in a healthy way. It took alot to be able to break the control that Noir had over him but he still couldn’t save him. And being brought to Paragon City, taken care of and helped where his parents could not be was hard on him. He tends to act out rather than show his emotions, but when he’s feeling down he usually sleeps more or gets a little moody.
Being strong was something that was drilled into him from an early age. He has to be strong or else other people take advantage of you. He also learned to be wary of adults and not trust them too easily as they’re more likely to take advantage of you. Still, over time he’s been able to be more trusting and give people the benefit of the doubt, however he will always be leery of them, especially if he gets the sense that they’re only being nice to him to get something out of him. Either good behavior or generally taking advantage of him. He hates being manipulated.
Shadow lives to fight. He loves the rush of battle, even if it’s just for sport. He might even go out of his way to egg someone on to fight him. Generally, he only picks a fight when he’s having a surge of darkness to blur his judgement, but he is always game for an arena battle or a good spar. He loves it, he was built for it. He’s also pretty good, though he knows he still has a lot to learn regarding his powers and body and how to use it to its potential. He’s also quite the showman and loves to put on a show, especially when he knows he’s at a distinct advantage. He’ll show off and get cocky just for the fun of it.
Powers and Abilities:
Shadow manipulation: Shadow is able to teleport through connected shadows or darkness by entering umbral space. He can also hold people in place if he has contact with shadows and summon dark tendrils to grab them if he wants. Lastly he can change the shape of any shadow he wants. His weakness for all of these powers, and a major proverbial kryptonite, is light. He doesn’t go out when the sun is high in the sky because it bothers him and makes him fatigued.
Enhanced physical attributes:He’s strong enough to lift a car over his head, but he really can’t throw something that heavy. Hes agile and quick and can reach speeds up to 60 miles an hour. In the darkness, he has very high endurance and can last for a long time in a fight. He can also take a hit and resist damage done to him by melee combat. He does poorly against projectiles or energy blasts, mostly because he’s almost exclusively hand to hand.
Healing factor: He has a healing factor that can heal shallow wounds within ten minutes, though not instantaneously. He can also leech life energy from someone while incontact with their shadow to enhance his own healing ability or revitalize himself.

[When his furry little face turns on this broadcast, he doesn't seem to really know what he's doing. Never really used a skype or video call before as he never really used these things. Smartphones and his paws aren't a great match, but this one had a stylus with it so he was doing alright. Still he's looking at the screen, not the camera.]
So anyone here from Primal Earth? [Oh, so he’s supposed to look at the camera? Alright.]
You know, Paragon City, Rogue Isles? Well if you're from the isles you might not wanna mention it, lots of capes around here so far. Heh.
Anyway I'm Shadow, and I'll try to stay outta trouble.
